Blackwell's School of Music and Film is family-owned and operates in Connecticut and New York. Since opening in 2012, we’ve treated every customer like they were a part of our family. Other companies may offer similar services, but our services come with a personal touch.
Luther A. Blackwell Jr., CEO, Music and Film Teacher
Luther received private training and secondary training at Berklee School of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Oberlin, Ohio and the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut.
Luther has performed with distinguished conductors such as: the late and great Leonard Bernstein of the New York Philharmonic, Seji Osawa of the Boston Symphony, Laurence Gilgore Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Connecticut Grand Opera and Orchestra, and Mr. Jessie Chapman Artistic, Director and Principal Conductor of the Westhill Chamber Singers. He has toured with numerous groups in the United States and Europe and has shared billing with Dion, Little Anthony, The Marvelettes, The Kingston Trio, Peter Newcomb, and Speedo and The Cadillacs. Mr. Blackwell has sung with the Mendelssohn Choir of Connecticut under Artistic Director and Conductor Carole Ann-Maxwell, DSM as a soloist and member for the 25th Anniversary Season.
Mr. Blackwell has an independent film and record company BSMF Films and LuNeIs Records. Luther has written more than 400 songs plus musical scores for off-Broadway shows. Credits include: "Generation X," "The Game," "Let's Go," "The Grinches that Stole Bridgeportville," and "Marginal Saints." "Marginal Saints" is a 2003 winner of the New York International Fringe Festival and a feature length movie filmed in 2005. In 2006, Luther with Bob Ramos of Sports Talk in Black ‘n’ White and The Bottom Line completed a documentary on the greatest football player of all time the legendary Jim Brown entitled “Jim Brown UNPLUGGED”.
Having been very active for the last 40 years teaching the youth of Connecticut in both the private and public sector he has served as a Music Instructor for the Bridgeport Public School District, Regional Center for the Arts, Fairfield University, Norwalk Community College, Norwalk Youth Symphony, Family and Children's Agency Inc., Giuliano's Music Center, Half Mile Music Studios. Luther is also the former Artistic Director for Neighborhood Studios. In 2002, he served as a grant reviewer for Connecticut Commission on the Arts and the Massachusetts Cultural Council for the Youth Reach Initiative.
In addition to teaching, he has been instrumental in giving youth the opportunity to learn and participate in the performing arts as co-founder of Shiloh Academy of the Creative Arts, Hall Academy of the Fine Arts, and founder of Original Works, Inc. Original Works Inc. was selected by the Connecticut Commission on the Arts and Connecticut Commission on Children for the Arts and After School Demonstration Initiative as one of three pilot sites. He was the videographer for Roosevelt Elementary School for President Obama's Arts and Humanities TurnAround Arts Initiative in 2015-2016.
Mr. Blackwell unique talents as educator, instrumentalist, conductor, vocal coach, composer and arranger makes him a sought-after musician Currently, Luther is the personal manager for R&B Recording Artists Robbie Jenkins, Denzel Williams, Jariba Dawkins, Shadiya Thompson and DJ Tony Crush of The Legendary Cold Crush Brothers. He is the Executive Director and Program Director of Blackwell's School of Music and Film and Music Director for New Hope Missionary Baptist Youth Singers located at 1100 Park Ave. in Bridgeport, CT.
